Rated at 500 N/mm minimum tensile strength, the ST500 steel cord conveyor belt is CBC India's proven specification for long-distance, high-tonnage material transport in mining, power, and port operations.

CBC India's ST500 steel cord conveyor belt is a high-performance, longitudinally reinforced belting system engineered for continuous heavy-duty material handling where multi-ply fabric constructions fall short. The designation ST500 is drawn directly from the ISO and DIN classification framework: "ST" denotes a steel cord tensile structure, and "500" specifies the guaranteed minimum breaking strength of 500 Newtons per millimeter of belt width — a baseline that defines this belt's suitability for medium-to-long haul conveying of bulk materials including coal, iron ore, limestone, aggregates, and cement clinker.

Unlike fabric-ply belts, which distribute load across layered textile plies, the ST500 achieves its rated strength through continuously longitudinal galvanized steel cords embedded within a vulcanized rubber matrix. This construction concentrates tensile load along the belt's running axis with extraordinary efficiency — a fundamental reason why steel cord belts dominate conveying systems exceeding 600 meters in center distance or handling capacities above 2,000 tonnes per hour.

Why CBC India? We supply ST500 belts manufactured to DIN 22131, ISO 283, and BIS specifications, with in-house splice training, on-site commissioning support, and a dedicated technical service team. Every belt ships with a full cord-by-cord test certificate.

Construction & Materials

How the ST500 Belt Is Built

The structural integrity of an ST500 steel cord conveyor belt begins at its core — the steel cord array. CBC India's ST500 specification uses high-carbon steel wire ropes in 7×7 or 7×19 lay configurations, each individually galvanized to resist corrosion under cover breaches or wet-duty conditions. Cord diameters typically range from 4.5 mm to 7.5 mm, spaced 10–16 mm center-to-center across the belt width, providing a uniform tensile field with no single point of stress concentration.

Core Cord Array

Each steel cord is brass-plated at the wire level prior to stranding. Brass bonding is critical: it forms a copper-zinc interphase with the rubber compound during vulcanization, achieving adhesion values exceeding 150 N/cm pull-out force per cord. The cords are embedded within a skim rubber layer — a high-modulus compound specially formulated to transfer shear stress between the cord array and cover plies without delamination under repeated bending cycles.

Top & Bottom Covers

The top (carrying) cover is specified at 6–10 mm thickness and compounded to match the abrasion profile of the material being conveyed. CBC India offers three standard grades: Grade M (general-purpose), Grade N (moderate abrasion, DIN Y equivalent), and Grade W (oil-resistant). For extreme abrasion — such as iron ore or quartzite aggregate — our Grade H compound achieves wear rates below 90 mm³ per the DIN 53516 abrader test.

The bottom (pulley) cover at 3–5 mm provides resistance to pulley friction, heat build-up from slip, and flex fatigue at the tail pulley. Optional breaker fabric plies — woven from high-tenacity polyamide — may be inserted between the cord array and top cover to arrest longitudinal rip propagation, a critical safety feature in operations handling sharp-edged ore or rock.

Splice-Friendly Geometry

The ST500's cord spacing is designed to accommodate hot-vulcanized step splices with 100% efficiency retention, per DIN 22131 splice design tables. Splice step lengths range from 320 mm to 480 mm depending on cord diameter, with the vulcanization cycle specified at 145–155°C for 35–50 minutes at 1.0–1.2 MPa press pressure. CBC India's field splice teams carry calibrated hydraulic presses and temperature-logged curing data for every splice performed.

Performance Characteristics

Why ST500 Outperforms Fabric Belts in Demanding Conveyors

The ST500 steel cord conveyor belt's performance advantage over multi-ply EP or NN fabric belts is most pronounced at three operational thresholds: haul distance, load per running meter, and elongation under working tension. At conveying distances above 600 m, fabric belt elongation — typically 1.5–2.0% under working load — demands proportionally larger take-up travel, increasing infrastructure cost and complexity. The ST500's sub-0.25% working elongation allows engineers to design shorter take-up arrangements, tighter belt tracking, and longer inter-support spans without sacrificing belt tension control.

Steel cord's uniform stress distribution across all cords simultaneously eliminates the localized ply failures common in fabric constructions, where individual plies delaminate progressively before catastrophic belt failure. This translates directly to longer inspection intervals, reduced emergency splice events, and measurable reduction in unplanned downtime — a critical metric in continuous process industries such as power generation and cement manufacturing.

Troughability & Load Profile

The ST500's cord matrix achieves deep trough angles (35°–45°) without excessive edge stiffness, enabling higher cross-sectional load areas and greater volumetric capacity per running meter at equivalent belt width versus stiffer ST grades. This is particularly advantageous in bulk ore handling where material piling characteristics demand a well-formed trough profile to prevent spillage at transfer points.

Fatigue Life & Bending Resistance

Each steel cord in the ST500 is designed to survive millions of bending cycles over the belt's 20,000-hour service life without fatigue fracture. At rated minimum pulley diameters — typically 500–630 mm for the ST500 class — individual wire stress remains within the elastic range, preventing progressive fatigue cracking that is the primary cord failure mode in undersized pulley applications. CBC India's belt specification sheets include minimum pulley diameter tables for every cord diameter variant we supply.

Precision Installation. Proactive Maintenance.

The ST500's performance guarantees are predicated on correct installation practice. Pre-tensioning must achieve 1.0–1.5% elongation of the take-up stroke before initial loading. Over-tensioning accelerates cord fatigue at pulley wrap points; under-tensioning permits belt sag, mis-tracking, and splice step failure. CBC India's commissioning engineers verify tension via strain gauge or electronic take-up weight monitoring on all major installations.

Splice Execution

Every ST500 splice is a hot-vulcanized step splice — the only method CBC India sanctions for rated-load joints on steel cord belts. The splice geometry follows DIN 22131 Part 3 tables, with cord exposure lengths, step widths, and overlap zones dimensioned to the specific cord diameter and belt width. Field teams use hydraulic curing presses with digital temperature controllers to maintain the 145–155°C cure range uniformly across the splice area. Cold-bonding or mechanical fasteners are not acceptable at ST-class joints in rated-load service.

Inspection Regime

CBC India recommends a structured maintenance program: visual cover inspection weekly for cuts, impact damage, and edge fraying; cord integrity survey monthly using magnetic flux leakage (MFL) scanning to detect broken wires or corrosion within the cord array without belt removal; and full splice audit semi-annually including pull-test cores where access permits. Galvanized cords provide a natural first line of defense against corrosion, but any top-cover breach exceeding 30 mm depth requires immediate repair to prevent moisture ingress and internal rusting.
