Construction

The EP500 carcass is built from 3–5 polyester warp and polyamide nylon weft fabric plies — most commonly in EP500/3 or EP500/4 configurations — vulcanized with rubber skim layers between each ply achieving inter-ply carcass adhesion of 4.8 N/mm minimum. Maximum working elongation is limited to 4% at break per DIN 22102, with the high-modulus fabric construction delivering the dimensional stability required across conveyor spans of 3.0–5.0 km. Standard belt widths run 1,200–3,000 mm with roll lengths up to 1,500 m per section. Total belt thickness ranges from 10–15 mm with a reference mass of 22–30 kg/m².

The top cover is specified at 5–6 mm in DIN Grade Y compound with a maximum abrasion loss of 150 mm³, meeting SANS 1173 tensile strength requirements of 25 MPa minimum. Heat-resistant formulations are available to 200°C, flame-retardant variants comply with ISO 284, and oil-resistant grades serve contaminated material streams. Rip-resistant constructions with additional ply count, food-grade white cover compounds, and chevron-patterned profiles for steep inclines up to 20° are available. The bottom cover at 1.5–3 mm provides pulley friction resistance from the 1,000–1,250 mm minimum pulley diameter upward.

Deep troughability accommodates 450 mm lump material with impact resistance exceeding 8 times that of cotton canvas constructions at equivalent width. Operating speeds reach 8.0 m/s with volumetric capacities of 8,000–15,000 tonnes per hour across 3.0–5.0 km spans.
